For those who use picture cards at home, work and therapy

Has any one read Jenny MCCarthy's bov Louder than Words or Mother Warriors? I found them at Sam's and can not put them down. What do you all think about her theory of a Window of Opportunity of reversing autism? Have any of you seen actual cases of moderate to severe autism being reversed ? What is meant by reversal? Has any one tried supplements or diets therapy? I teach low functioning middle school students. This approach is new to me. My daughter (a SLP) works from a Pediatric Hospital setting. Her specific expertise is with the feeding clinic and swallowing issues. She has mostly medicaid patients. We are not seeing what McCarthy is talking about. Does she have valid points or is it false hope?

Well my kids are 12 and 13. I am not interested in changing them and have accepted autism when the diagnosis came over ten years ago, which is long before I even knew or cared to know who Jenny Mc Carthy is. My son Matthew has had feeding therapy for over five years, started at the clinic and theh I said it needed tobe done in the home as here is where the issues lie and the food we have.

I would imagine if you approached the parents to the students you teach in MiddleSchool that they would be insulted by Jenny McCarthy and her saving parents need to do all tbey can to erase autism. She does not live in our world or deal with the issues low fuctioning kids do. I have never heard of moderate to severe kids with autism being cured or reversing them, then again the families are too busy living life with autism to consider such nonsense.

Thank You My parents are insulted by the idea that they did not do all they could do when the kids were small. They did and continue to do so. But when I read this Hollywood stuff ( Strange Sons is another ) or look at the autism for sale site. . I do wonder if there is another world of autism I know nothing about. It is nice to have this forum of r a reality check with parents who are in the trenches .

I agree about Strange Son, and wrote a review on it. Who calls their child a Strange Son?

I don't blame parents for looking into new research, but it just does not show enough research to be valid as a cure. I refuse to think of Autism as a disease that needs to be "cured" now. It is a condition. Defeat Autism Now is something you might want to read on too. I have had several encounters with parents who are on or tried the GFCF (Gluten Free-Casein Free) Diet and have found it too restricting for the child. Often times, during snack time, the child grabs his or her classmates' snacks, desperate for food he once had a taste of. I have tried the stuff and they are just too bland.

On the parent calling his son, "strange son." I must say that she is the one i find strange. Somebody in that position has a responsibility to the parents to be more on top of her situation. She sure sounded like she's still in denial to look at autism that way. Maybe when they have shown us better research we will start to believe, but for now, we will live, play and learn with our children/students the way we have and there is nothing strange about that.
